What are the differences between frosted window decals and frosted window lettering? Which one should one choose?

When it comes to our frosted window signage catalogue options, our customers may choose between frosted window decals and frosted window lettering, as well as between two different types of frosted window lettering – standard or reverse cut. All our frosted window signage products are made from the same vinyl material, employ the same installation method, and create the etched / frosted appearance for the glass surface they are applied to. The main difference between these types of frosted window signage products relies on how the quoted design is to be incorporated into the frosted vinyl material. As for which one should our customer/s choose, it is entirely up to their preferences and depends on which of these alternatives looks the best for their purposes.

Below, we have provided a short breakdown on the distinguishing characteristics for each of our frosted window signage products –
Frosted window vinyl lettering / reverse cut – This type of frosted window signage product is made when the quoted design is cut away from the background of frosted vinyl material, allowing the transparency of the decal in the place where the design itself – image, text, or graphic – is located.
Frosted window vinyl lettering / standard cut – This type of frosted window signage product is made when the quoted design is cut out of the frosted vinyl material to the exact shape requested. The inner elements of the design that should be transparent are picked / weeded out as well – as an example, the inside of a ‘B’ is cut out instead of being left solid.
Frosted window decals – This type of frosted window signage is made when a design is printed directly onto the surface of the blank frosted vinyl material with an ultraviolet ink and state of the art four color printing process. This ensures that all colors utilized in the submitted design are maintained to their full capacity.

If one orders standard cut frosted window vinyl lettering, can they expect their individual letters and design elements to be placed on the same sheet of transfer tape?

Most of the time, the individual letters and design elements contain within a standard cut frosted window vinyl lettering design will be adequately spaced and placed on a single sheet of pre-masked transfer tape, ensuring a quick and easy installation. However, if the quoted design for standard cut frosted window vinyl lettering exceeds forty-eight inches for two color design, twenty-four inches for multiple color designs, in both dimensions, the standard cut frosted window vinyl lettering will be split and placed onto two sheets of pre-masked transfer tape. For designs with multiple colors, the standard cut frosted window vinyl lettering will be packed in multiple sheets of pre-masked transfer tape, with each separate color grouped together in its own sheet/

What materials do we use for manufacturing our frosted window signage?

We manufacture our frosted window signage with an adhesive vinyl material also known as ‘etched glass’ which is roughly zero-point-zero-zero-two inches thick. Our frosted window signage products come with a clear backing that can be peeled away to reveal the adhesive side of the product. Our frosted window vinyl lettering (standard and reverse cut) also comes with a layer of pre-masked transfer tape placed over the top of the decal, ensuring a simple and easy installation.

How do colors printed onto frosted window signage products appear?

  • Frosted window decal – Due to the nature of the material utilized for production, the printed color, as well as the blank areas, will print somewhat translucent allowing some light and shadow to pass through.
  • Frosted vinyl window lettering / reverse and standard cut – Considering that this type of frosted window signage product is cut out of a raw frosted vinyl material instead of printed on blank it will not contain any color aside from the one presented by the raw, blank frosted vinyl material itself.

How can one tell which parts of the frosted window signage product will appear frosted?

The areas of our frosted window signage products that will appear frosted upon production are indicated by the gray frosted background within the online design tool. If one wants any part of their quoted frosted window signage design to be frosted instead of printed or cut, that gray background must be marked upon placing the finished design. If one uploads their own picture file with the desired design we will not print the white of that background. The white area will be frosted instead.
It is very important to note that when submitting their own design files, our customers are required to submit vector artwork – .ai, .eps, . Svg, .pdf – in order to achieve the correct distribution of frosted background on their design and final frosted window signage product. If any help is needed, our customers are welcome to refer to our free online design services.

Can one order a blank sheet of frosted vinyl material from our website?

Absolutely! If one is interested in ordering a blank sheet of frosted vinyl material, all they need to do is get started on the frosted window signage design and make sure not to add any design elements to the decal when in the design tool.

Do we offer other types of window decals?

Absolutely! In addition to the frosted window signage products, we also offer clear window graphics, opaque window decals, and perforated window decals. Additionally, we offer a ‘static cling’ which relies on static electricity to adhere to windows and other glassy surfaces.
One can find a more detailed explanation of the differences, advantages, and disadvantages among these decals on our ‘window signage options’ page.

What are the differences between our frosted window signage products and the etched glass decals, or stickers?

All of these are mutually interchangeable terms which refer to window signage products made out of a translucent vinyl material with an adhesive backing that is suitable for installation onto smooth glass surfaces.

How thick are our frosted window signage products?

Our frosted window signage products are razor thin. More precisely, they are two millimeters, or zero-point-zero-zero-two inches thick. In other words, they are thinner than a piece of common paper. This extremely thin signage solution provides aesthetically pleasing window signs that are simultaneously clear, durable, and easily repositionable.

What is the lifespan of our frosted window signage products?

With proper installation and care, our frosted window signage products can last for three or more years in an interior setting. For exterior settings, depending on the amount of exposure to elements and other factors, the lifespan for our frosted window signage products is, on average, three years.

Will the exposure to weather elements ruin our frosted window signage products?

Our clear frosted window signage products are designed to be used in interior and exterior settings, which means they are resistant to weather and its elements. However, exposure to extreme weather for a long period of time will eventually degrade the product.
While a frosted window signage product that has been installed on the inside will last longer than the one which has been installed outside, both are intended uses for our frosted window signage products.

Can our frosted window signage products be cut to the exact shape or individual elements?

Cut options for this type of window decal differs depending on the sub-type:
Frosted window vinyl lettering / reverse cut – The frosted window signage will remain square or rectangular while the exact shape of the quoted design and its individual elements will be cut out of the frosted vinyl material background.
Frosted window vinyl lettering / standard cut -The quoted design and its individual elements will be cut to the exact shape from the raw and blank frosted vinyl material, with the appropriate inside spaces picked / weeded out.
Frosted window decals – We can cut our frosted window decals into any shape our customers require. We normally don’t recommend cutting a clear window graphic to any shape whatsoever because the frosted part of the decal is translucent enough to render cutting to shape redundant.
However, but selecting ‘custom with border’ shape option in our online design tool, it assumes a small border will remain around the edge of the cut, one can customize their clear window graphic to any shape and size. Additional shape options one can choose from for their clear window graphic include square, rectangle, rounded corners (a quarter of and inch radius, or an inch radius), circle, and oval.
If one is interested in individually cut letters for their storefront or home windows, they are most likely looking for our cut vinyl lettering which is a completely different product.
Our frosted window decals can be cut in a diverse range of shapes including square, rectangle, rounded corners (a quarter of an inch radius, and an inch radius), circle, oval, custom, and custom with border. This allows our customers to fully customize the shape of their frosted window decal.

What are the minimum and maximum sizes for our frosted window signage products?

Our frosted window signage products cannot be manufactured to be smaller than six inches by six inches, nor larger than forty-eight inches in both dimensions. As long as the dimensions are kept within these parameters, the options are virtually limitless.

Does incorporating multiple colors in a frosted window signage products design affect the price?

We print everything in full color. This means that regardless of the number of colors and shades incorporated in an frosted window signage design, the price will not change. The price of a frosted window signage product is determined by their size and quantity.
We also offer bulk discounts that refer to orders of two or more signage products of the same design. One should account for other potential costs, such as shipping and taxes, when applied.

Is one required to use one of our provided templates when creating their frosted window signage design?

The templates one may find on our website have been provided for our customer’s convenience. If one sees something they like, they may use it and tweak it to fit their needs. If one cannot find something they are looking for in our provided templates, there are several more options available.

Our frosted window signage products allow some light and shadow to pass through, making them ideal for privacy and decorative purposes.

Frosted Window Decals – Installation

We manufacture our frosted window decals as pre-spaced and pre-masked with transfer tape. This ensures an all at once simple installation process which allows all components of the product to be installed at the same time.
Our frosted window decals is a wet install which means that it requires a water and soap based mixture in order to adhere to the designated surface. We have provided the detailed installation guide below, as well as an instructional video one can find on our website.
It is important to note that, for larger designs which are intended to cover entire windows or other large surfaces, it is our recommendation that professional help is employed for best results.

  • Before the application of frosted window decals begins, the following supplies are to be gathered to facilitate the process:
  • Spray bottle;
  • Paper towels;
  • Application squeegee (available as an additional purchase with every order at a small additional cost);
  • Window squeegee;
  • Razor knife;
  • Ruler.

  • The designated surface for your frosted window decals is to be thoroughly cleaned prior to the installation. It should be allowed to either air dry, or wiped dry with a squeegee.
  • The application solution for the frosted window decals is to be created by combining three drops of dish soap with one gallon of water and placed into a spray bottle.
  • The designated installation location for your frosted window vinyl lettering is to be measured.
  • The frosted window decals is to be held up to the window in the designated location and a horizontal strip of masking or painters tape is to be applied to the top of the frosted window decals in order to create a hinge.
  • The bottom edge of the frosted window decals is to be held away from the window, and the designated surface is to be sprayed with the application solution that has been created in the step above.
  • The back liner is to be removed from the frosted window decals, starting from the top corner and going down to the adjacent bottom corner. As the back liner is being removed, the application solution is to be generously sprayed onto the adhesive side of frosted window decals.

The squeegee is to be used from left to right and from top to bottom.
  • If bubbles or creases begin to develop during this process, the affected portion of the frosted window decals is to be lifted carefully away from the surface and the application process is to be repeated.
  • Once the entire frosted window decals has been applied to the window without major bubbles or creases, the squeegee is to be ran over entire graphic one more time in order to ensure that the adhesive has firmly attached to the surface.
  • Then, the pre-masked transfer tape is to be removed, starting from the top corner and going down to the adjacent bottom corner. If any of the frosted window decals begins to peel off the surface during this process, the squeegee is to be used to firmly adhere it back to it, until the pre-masked tape comes fully cleanly off.
  • Once the pre-masked transfer tape has been fully removed, the back liner is to be laid over the installed frosted window decals and hard pressure is to be applied with a squeegee. This will remove any air bubbles or creases that may have formed during the application.
  • Paper towels are to be used to clean the surface the frosted window decals has been installed on, and to remove any excess water from the edges of the graphic. It may take several days for the adhesive to completely dry and bind to the surface.

Be careful not to use an edge that will rip or tear your decal. For this reason we recommend a rubber tipped squeegee. If certain small spots or areas are proving difficult to smooth out then small holes can be punctured with a pin or razor blade and the air removed by smoothing it out with a finger. Once the water is removed and the backing dries, your decal will be applied to the window. We do not recommend trying to reposition the decal once it is fully adhered to the window. The decals aren’t designed to be repositioned after the initial installation. If this is what you need, we recommend using static clings.

Does frosted window signage products installation require more than one person?

Generally speaking, installation of the frosted window signage products can be done with one person for smaller decals. For larger frosted window signage products, we recommend that at least two people install the decal. This will prevent the frosted window signage product from sticking to itself (but if it does then you can still pull it apart) during the process and makes for a much easier squeegee process and overall application of the frosted window signage product.

How does one store their frosted window signage products?

If you wish to take down and store your frosted window signage product it is best done using the original backing to protect the applied side from collecting dust, debris or other particles which will deteriorate the ability to stick to a desired surface. If you need to store them for a period of time, not greater than one year, before actually installing them make sure to keep the backing on the frosted window signage products and store them at room temperature in a non-humid setting.

How does one clean frosted window signage products?

Once installed your frosted window signage products can be cleaned of dirt or dust buildup by wiping it with a wet rag or cloth. Regular and light cleaning will help keep the frosted window signage product looking bright and clear.

How does one remove frosted window signage products?

Our frosted window signage products can be removed by simply peeling it away from the window or surface where it is applied. Because of our frosted window signage products proprietary adhesion technology you do not need to worry about any residual stickiness or cleanup that is associated with a typical window decal.

Can the window frosted window signage products have been installed on be washed afterwards?

Yes, washing your windows should not adversely impact your sign. The only exception to this is using any kind of power washer or spray gun directly on the decal. This can damage the decal and cause it to fall off the window. Likewise, using tools such as an industrial squeegee is also not very wise, as it can pull onto the installed frosted window signage product or cause the edges of he product to come away from the surface it had been installed on. This can make the frosted window signage product eventually peel away from the surface it had been installed to altogether, or simply cause it to have a ragged and very unprofessional appearance.
