Boat Lettering / Installation

All of our boat lettering comes pre-spaced and pre-masked with transfer tape, making the application a simple, all-at-once process. To install our boat lettering properly, simply follow the step by step instructions we have outlined below and you shall have your boat lettering installed exactly as you want it without hassle.
The installation manual we have provided below refers to one-color and simple two-color boat lettering.
For boat lettering with complex or multiple color designs, for the purposes of quality production and installation, one should install their boat lettering layer by layer for the same seamless and professional look.

– Before applying our boat lettering to a designated boat surface, the designated area is to be cleaned with either boat or glass cleaner; one will want to remove any dirt or grime from the designated surface. Additionally, the entire boat should be clean of any wax or polish prior to the installation in order for our boat lettering to properly apply.
– Another thing to attend to prior to the installation, is ensuring that any paint has been fully cured. Attempting to apply our boat lettering to uncured paint can permanently damage it. Lastly, the optimal temperature range for both the designated surface and the air for the best result installation is between sixty and ninety degrees Fahrenheit.
– Our boat lettering does not require professional assistance for installation. Although, when it comes to larger designs, some help may be necessary in order to prevent the material from prematurely sticking to the surface or itself.
– Complex designs with multiple colors will require that the boat lettering is placed on the desired surface in layers. We have outlined this process below.
– The steps to installing boat lettering have been presented below. We advise reading all the steps carefully before staring the application. The steps we have outlined below should be followed in order to ensure proper application.
– The backing of the boat lettering should be carefully peeled away, stating from the top. Not all backing should be peeled away. Initially, only a thin horizontal stretch of the backing should be peeled. Transfer tape and boat lettering, both of which have their adhesive side exposed at this step of the process, should be prevented from touching the designated surface.
– While holding the adhesive sides of transfer tape and boat lettering away from the designated surface, a hand or another flat surface, such as credit card or squeegee, should be used to evenly and firmly press the adhesive backing of the boat lettering and transfer tape to the surface. This should be done top to bottom, across the horizontal stretch which has been exposed in the previous step.
– The backing is to be peeled away little by little while the lettering is evenly and firmly pressed, with transfer tape on top of it, onto the surface.
– Once the boat lettering has fully been applied to the surface, the transfer tape is to be carefully removed.

* For complex designs with multiple colors, once the first layer has been applied to the surface, including the dots in the upper left and bottom right corners, the next layer should be placed by aligning the dots of the second layer with the first layer. It is important to note that the layers are not labeled. The application is to be continued by utilizing the dots on the designated surface and repeating the steps outlined above.

– Any bubbles that remain are to be removed, as well as any non-permanent markings.

* For complex designs with multiple colors, the vinyl dots should also be removed at the end of the installation process. Boat Lettering / Product Specifications

What are the differences between boat decals and boat lettering?

– While they appear to be quite similar, our boat decals and our boat lettering do differ greatly in purpose and use. Our boat lettering has specifically been designed and produced for the purposes of featuring numbering and lettering on boats. This may include names, registration numbers, and hailing port designation.
Our boat lettering references individual letters, numbers, and other design elements that are individually cut from a solid piece of pre-colored vinyl material, and do and cannot feature any printed elements. Our boat lettering cannot be used to feature printed images, intricate designs, text effects, or gradients, because it is cut out of a solid piece of pre-colored vinyl material, instead of printed onto blank.
Our boat decals feature a graphics that are printed on high grade vinyl material with highly adhesive properties, and are not cut out as individual pieces. Our boat decals do not come with a pre-masked transfer tape as they are produced as in a single piece of material. Having the graphic produced on a single piece of material means that all the required spacing of the given design will be printed onto the material, and won’t require additional pre-spacing that is necessary with individually cut design elements that are featured in boat lettering. Our boat decals have been designed and produced to display logos and images. Intricate graphics that feature images, colors, gradients, and letter effects can all be printed onto our highly adhesive vinyl material, but cannot be featured in boat lettering.

How large should boat lettering be?

– Our boat lettering is available in a wide range of sizes so it can fit whatever needs our customers may have. In order to determine what the size of boat lettering should be, one should start by measuring the surface they wish to apply boat lettering to.
The general rule of the thumb is that one inch of height for ten feet of visibility is also a good guide for how large boat lettering needs to be in order to be seen by others.

What is the best place for displaying a registration number on a boat?

– In most cases, registration numbers are required by law to be displayed on the forward half of the boat – also known as the bow of the boat – and as high above the waterline as possible. Registration numbers are also required to be visible on boat sides of the boat so one should make sure to adjust the quantity of boat lettering they are placing an order for that is to serve this purpose.

Can our boat lettering be submerged for long periods of time?

– Our boat lettering has not been designed and produced to be submerged in the water for extended periods of time. Submerging our boat lettering for a long period of time can and will deteriorate the adhesive properties of the lettering, and the quality of the graphics. Our boat lettering is best used above the waterline for the purposes of ensuring they work as intended, and that they are adequately visible as per local or state regulations.

Do we place all individual letters and design elements of a boat lettering design onto a single sheet of transfer tape?

– In most cases, the individual letters and graphics contained within one’s boat quoted design will be appropriately spaced and placed on a single sheet of transfer tape, making application simple and easy.
However, if boat exceeds the size of forty-eight inches, for black and white colors, or twenty-four inches, for all other colors, in either width or length, the boat lettering will be split and placed onto two sheets of transfer tape. If the quoted boat comes in three colors or more, it will be placed on multiple sheets of transfer tape, as many as there are colors.

What is a hailing port? How does one identify it on their boat?

– A hailing port is the originating port of the boa. The law requires that all boats have a hailing port visibly displayed on the stem of all documented vessels in the US. The proper display of a hailing port includes a display of the name, the state, and the territory of the port. The name of the states may be abbreviated on the boat display.

Are there any laws regulating boat lettering usage?

– The laws regulating boat lettering usage differ from state to state, but may be learned through the inquiry at the state and local ordinances. The most common laws pertaining to boat lettering usage are in reference to their height – at least three inches high block letters for registration and four inches high for hailing port designation -, spacing of letters and numbers with a hyphen or space, as well as the contrast of the letters and numbers to the color of the vessel. We recommend each of our customers inquires with their state offices and law for more detailed requirements.

Where can one find information on registering their boat?

– Information on boat registration process can typically be found at any state’s DMV, or Parks and Wildlife website.

Does one need to register their boat?

– Regulations pertaining to boat registration can vary from state to state. Most often though, boats that are motorized, used as commercial vessels, or sail boats that exceed fourteen feet in length must be registered.

Do we provide registration or license stickers for boats?

– No. Registration and / or license stickers can only be obtained through state agencies – in most cases the DMV or / and Department of Parks and Wildlife are the issuing authorities -. The registration stickers are to be placed adjacent to the registration numbers on the front half of the boat. The issuing agencies we have mentioned also normally provide boat owners with specific requirements regarding the placement of these stickers.

What is our boat lettering made from?

– We craft our boat lettering in high-performance two millimeters-thick (fifty microns) cast film of highest quality, with adhesive technology applied to its back. Our boat lettering is designed to last up to eight to ten years (depending on usage and climate conditions). The material we use in production is self-adhesive and comes in more than thirty-five pre-designated colors.

Do we offer boat wraps?

– Unfortunately, we do not offer full or partial boat wrapping products at the present.

Do we offer boat stripes or striping?

– Our boat decals may be used as a long thin strip for striping purposes, but our boat lettering cannot. We should note here that the maximum length for such a stripe is thirty-three feet. Additionally, we do not provide any professional installation aid or tools for these long stripe boat decals.

What is the estimated lifespan of boat lettering?

– Our boat can last between eight and ten years with proper installation and care.

Will exposure to elements ruin our boat lettering?

– Our boat lettering have been designed and produced to withstand both direct sunlight and harsh elements for long periods of time.

Does our boat lettering have a laminate over top?

– No, our boat lettering does not have laminate on its external side. Our boat lettering is professionally crafted to last between eight and ten years, indoors or outdoors, without any laminate use. We manufacture them with ultraviolet-protected material to ensure a long lifespan.

What are the maximum and minimum dimensions of our boat lettering?

– The minimum size for our boat lettering is one by one inch. Due to the paneling technique we use, there is no precise maximum size for our boat lettering, allowing our customers to go as large as they’d like. This allows our customers to create some very large graphics that can be used on large s, such as buses and semi trucks.
However, it is important to note, that if either width or height of the quoted boat lettering design exceeds twenty-four inches, then the boat lettering will have to be comprised of multiple sheets / panels of vinyl, which will create a small seam in the design. If one wishes to keep seams out of their boat lettering design, they must keep the dimensions under twenty-four inches, or two feet, in one direction (width or height) and six hundred inches (fifty feet) in the other.
If one orders a large boat lettering, we recommend they either employ professional installation help, or get a few other people to help ensure proper installation.

Can our boat lettering cut to shape, or individual letters?

– Boat lettering (cut vinyl / vinyl lettering) is a signage solution that is produced when the quoted design is cut out of a pre-colored sheet of self-adhesive two millimeter vinyl material and can be cut into letters, numbers, or other individual design elements. It consists of individual design elements, usually letters, that are cut to the exact shape and then pre-spaced and placed onto pre-masked transfer tape, allowing it to be installed in one seamless process with exact accuracy.

Does choice of color affect the pricing of boat lettering?

– No. The colors we have listed in our offer all come at the same cost. However, ordering boat lettering in custom color, as per custom order, as well as ordering boat lettering in multiple colors will slightly increase the price.

How does incorporating multiple colors affect boat lettering?

– Including multiple colors in one’s quoted boat lettering will affect the printing, shipping, and installation process of boat lettering. Most designs that are quoted in two colors can be produced in the same manner as one-color boat lettering – that is, placed on a single sheet of pre-masked transfer tape. Application of one-color or simple two-color boat lettering can be done all at once as per installation manual we have provided below, and our downloadable PDF one may also find further down on this page.
Large or complex designs that include multiple colors will be produced in layers according to color. This means that one will receive multiple sheets of boat lettering – each with a pre-masked tape over the top of their vinyl lettering design. Each layer will contain a boat lettering dot in the upper left and bottom right corner of the pre-masked transfer tape the purpose of which is to facilitate alignment during application. To apply complex boat lettering to one’s wall, they should simply align each sheet, using the dots on the upper left and the bottom right corner of each layer.
Then, beginning with the first layer, one should attach it to the wall and peel away the pre-masked transfer tape. Next, they should align the second layer in the desired position by lining up its registration dots to the ones from the previous layer which have now been installed on the wall. Proceed by adhering the boat lettering to the wall. This step is top be repeated until all layers have been installed as desired.
So long as the marks on each sheet are aligned correctly as the boat lettering is installed, it will appear as if the color layers came from a single sheet of pre-masked transfer tape. This method of boat lettering installation is done for higher quality production purposes, and is the preferred method of professional installation team due to the more seamless end result.
Finally, remove all the small dots, if any remain, that were applied during installation.

How thick is our boat lettering?

– Two millimeters-thick (fifty microns), about the thickness of half a sheet of copy paper. This enables our boat lettering not to protrude from the surface it is installed on, while maintaining quality and durability.

Does one have to use one of our templates for boat lettering?

– While we offer numerous existing templates across a wide range of different categories, our customers are not required to use one of them. We have provided an online design tool which allows our customers to design their own boat lettering from scratch, by using a blank template or by uploading a wide range of file types for pre-designed graphics. Additionally, we offer free design services in which we can design a graphic for you, or improve an existing design, completely free of charge.

Is our boat lettering visible in the dark? Do we offer alternative types of boat lettering such as premium, reflective, or marine?

– Our boat lettering is not visible in the dark. As far as premium vinyl, the default vinyl material we use has exceptional quality, and has a durability and lifespan that are similar to what other providers offer as their ‘premium’ product. At the moment, however, we do not offer reflective or marine vinyl types.  If one is interested in creating boat lettering out of one of these vinyl types, we may still be able to help. Boat Lettering / Usage

Will our boat letering ruin the boat paint?

– No, the installation and the removal of our boat lettering will not hurt or damage any surface they are installed on. The only way for paint to be damaged as a result of using our boat lettering on it is if the paint is scratched by a metal squeegee during installation. For this reason, we offer a felt-tipped squeegee as an additional purchase with your boat lettering, at a small additional cost.
However, if the body, or paint of the boat have been previously damanged, the boat lettering can cause further damage upon removal as the adhesive utilized on its back may pull away the paint or body fragments which had been weakened by the prior damage.
A boat lettering that has been installed for an extended period of time may cause the paint underneath to be less vibrant than the rest due to fading over time.

Is our boat lettering completely waterproof?

– Our boat lettering has been designed and produced to be displayed in water-rich environments. However, full submersion of our boat decals for extended periods of time is still against our recommendation. We also advise against attempting to install our boat lettering while the designated surface is wet. Our boat lettering is best placed above the waterline.

Can our boat lettering be installed on wooden, or fiberglass boats?

– Absolutely! Our boat lettering can be used on treated, smooth wooden surfaces. Untreated and porous wooden surfaces, and fiberglass are not suitable for boat lettering installation. Our boat lettering are also not to be installed or rubber, silicone, or flexibe plastics.

Can our lettering decals also be used on speed boats, power boats, jet skis, ski doos, and wave runners?

– Our boat lettering can be aplied to a wide variety of watercraft and outdoor s. The only restriction is that they are not to be used on a surface area of any watercraft that is to be submberged in water for extended periods of time. One is to make sure wheere the waterline of their watercraft is before applying our boat lettering to it. Additionally, our boat lettering is best applied to smooth, non-porous surfaces for optimal long-term results.

What is the best way to clean the surface of a boat a boat lettering is installed on?

– The designated surface of a boat is always to be cleaned immediately before the boat lettering installation. It is our recommendation that good quality liquid dish detergent is used with some lukewarm water – one ounce of detergent per gallon of water. Soaps which contain waxes, oils, or lotions are not suitable for this cleaning purpose. Some window cleaners may also contain wax, so this should be checked for before using any.
The surface of the boat is to be dried via clean, lint-free paper towel or cloth. A heat source may be used for speeding up the drying process. Once the designated surface has dried out, it is to be cleaned again with a solvent-based cleaner to remove any potential wax residue from it. This is to be done by soaking a clean, lint free towel or cloth with the aforementioned solvent-based cleaner. If the paper towel / cloth becomes dirty while cleaning, it is to be switched with a clean one to prevent dirt from smearing across the designated surface. It is to be fully dried again before the application begins.

Do we include a squeegee with our boat lettering order shipment?

– We include a squeegee as an optional purchase as default during the checkout process. If one does not want a squeegee, they may deselect this option in our design tool.

Can our boat lettering withstand frost / snow, and freezing temperatures?

– Our boat lettering has been designed and produced to withstand temperatures as low as minus forty degrees Fahrenheit. If the surface temperature is too cold it can cause our boat lettering to become brittle and not adhere properly. Surface temperatures that are too hot can cause our boat lettering to bake into the surface of the vehicle which can cause damage to the paint.
Our boat lettering is waterproof, can withstand snow, ice, and frost. One of the most common issues our customers face with our boat lettering is when the product gets damaged during the process of scraping frost off the surface they are installed on. For that reason, we recommend the scrapping is done carefully around the edges of the boat lettering, in order to prevent the scraping.

Does one need to edge their boat lettering during the initial installation?

– If one chooses to employ professional aid for their boat lettering installation, they will edge seal it. While an amateur individual may do so themsleves with correct tools and technique, we have found that if our instruction guide is followed adequately, our boat lettering can and will work just fine without this additional precaution, which can even have adverse effects if not done right (executed by professionals).

Does our boat lettering come with a backing? How does one remove it?

– Absolutely! Our boat lettrering comes with a frosted backing. The easiest way to remove it is to slightly bend the lettering at the corner just like with a sticker. If this does not seem to work, a small piece of scotch tape can be used facilitate the process as demonstrated in the featured instruction video on our website.

Can one wash their boat immediately after installing our boat lettering?

– It is our recommendation that one does not wash their boat immediately after installing our boat lettering. The vessel and the boat lettering should be allowed at least twenty-four hours to set properly before the boat is washed or taken out on the water.

Will the water salt damage our boat lettering?

– With proper installation and care, our boat lettering are not easily damaged by salt water. To prevent damage, we advise the boat, especially around the area where the boat lettering is installed, is cleaned on a regular basis.

How does one care for our boat lettering?

– Our boat lettering has been designed and produced to withstand the harshest of elements that come with boating and inclement weather conditions that follow. What happens if bubbles appear when boat lettering is installed?

– If the boat lettering has been installed properly, no bubbles should appear. If any small bubbles do appear during the installation process, that portion of the boat lettering should simply be lifted and reapplied. Large bubbles which carry the risk of tearing the lettering or rendering it unusable can be punctured with a pin or a needle. Air can then be removed by carefully pressing against the lettering by hand, or with a flat object. We advise extreme care when removing large bubbles in order to avoid wrinkling of the material.

Does our boat lettering fade over time, especially if they are used in harsh weather and climates?

– Our boat lettering is prone to scratching. These scratches can be permanent and can negatively affect the aesthetic appearance of the lettering.
To prevent this, one should avoid applying excessive pressure to their boat lettering with fingernails, installations squeegees, or any other hard or sharp surface, especially during the installation process. Our boat lettering is rugged which enables them to withstand inclement and harsh weather conditions for up to five years with proper care and maintenance. Our boat lettering is able to persist in temperatures ranging between minus forty degrees Fahrenheit and three hundred and two degrees Fahrenheit, assuming they are installed at milder temperatures.

Will the color of the boat be different upon removal of the boat lettering that has been placed over it?

– Most often, this should not be the case. Most boat paints are made to be resistant to fade, sunlight, and other elements, which enables boat lettering such as ours to be applied to them for long periods of time without causing any damage or change. It should be noted that results may vary depending on the quality of the vessel’s paint job, and on the length of time for which our boat lettering has been installed.

How does one remove our boat lettering?

– Our boat lettering is meant to peel right off a boat. A flat surface that won’t damage the vessel surface or paint can be used to help peel the lettering away. Boat lettering which has been in place for a long time may be a bit more difficult to remove. In this case, heating it up can facilitate the process. Any residual adhesive can be cleaned with a basic boat cleaner and a cloth.
